Last night saw the2018 Grammy Awardsair on CBS. Since that’s music’s biggest night, it’s not something we usually cover, but the Grammys also honor achievements in music from the world of cinema, as well as work that is cinema-adjacent.

When it comes to Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media, an award that has only been given out since 2000,La La Landbeat out some pretty serious competition. The other nominees includedGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Baby Driver, Hidden Figuresand Disney’sMoana.
Meanwhile, for Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media,La La Landcomposer Justin Hurwitz beat outJóhann JóhannssonforArrival,Hans ZimmerforDunkirk,Ramin DjawadiforGame of Thrones, and the trio ofBenjamin Wallfisch, Pharrell WilliamsandHans ZimmerforHidden Figures.
Even thoughMoanamay have lost out on winning Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media, Disney’s wonderful musical didn’t go home empty-handed. The signature song “How Far I’ll Go,” written byLin-Manuel Mirandaand sung byAuli’i Cravalho, took home the Grammy for Best Song Written For Visual Media. The song won out over “City of Stars” fromLa La Land, “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” fromFifty Shades Darker, “Never Give Up” fromLion, and “Stand Up for Something” fromMarshall.
In the instrumental awards, John Williams ended up going home with a Grammy thanks to a special arrangement of a track from his underratedCatch Me If You Canscore. The legendary composer put together a new arrangement of his track “Escapades” from the 2002 film directed bySteven Spielbergfor the recent albumJohn Williams & Steven Spielberg: The Ultimate Collection.
Finally, on the spoken word side of things, the lateCarrie Fisheradded one more award to her decorated career. Fisher won the Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album (Includes Poetry, Audio Books & Storytelling) for the recording of her final book,The Princess Diarist. Meanwhile, comedianDave Chappelletook home a Grammy for his double stand-up specialThe Age Of Spin & Deep In The Heart Of Texas, now available on Netflix.
Rapper Kendrick Lamar also took home a handful of awards last night, which should get you more excited for the upcomingBlack Panthersoundtrack he produced, which has a good chance at getting a Grammy nomination next year.
