Disney Confirms That’s Luke’s Lightsaber In ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Trailer
A Disney mouthpiece has identified one of the lightsabers in theStar Wars: The Force Awakenstrailer… but the trick is that the one revealed as belonging to a classic character isn’t the trailer saber you’re thinking of. Sure, there’s that red one, the weapon with the blazing hilt that has inspired enough conversation that Stephen Colbertgave it a whole segmenton one of his final episodes ofThe Colbert Report. But there is, as they say, another. The other is the sound heard at the end of the trailer, and if you’ve got keen ears like Harry Caul you might know what that saber is.(It’s Luke’s lightsaber.)
The very end of theForce Awakenstrailer fades out as we hear the sound of a lightsaber igniting. In fact, it’s one of the first lightsaber sounds we ever heard — that’s the sound from the 1977 Star Wars, when Luke ignites the saber handed over to him by Obi Wan Kenobi.
So it wasn’t just that the sound of the saber turning on was familiar — it’s that we’ve heard that specific sound before, probably dozens of times. How do we know? When Good Morning America covered the trailer, broadcast on the Disney-owned ABC, the segment confirmed the ID of the saber sound. Check it out, at around 2:15 below. (ViaUproxx.)
There’s been a lot of talk about Luke’s role inThe Force Awakens, and even specifically about the role his original lightsaber could play in the story. None of that is confirmed at this point, but knowing that we hear that specific sound in the trailer won’t quiet the speculation. Sure, it could just be a good way to call back to the 1977 original, but when this trailer obviously chooses every moment with specific consideration, is that all the sound is meant to be?
