Josh Hutcherson May Have Revealed Plans For More ‘Hunger Games’ Movies [UPDATED]
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2brings Katniss' story to a finish. But that doesn’t necessarily spell the end for the franchise as a whole. In a recent interview, starJosh Hutchersonlet slip a remark that suggests moreHunger Gamesmovies could be in our future. Read his comments after the jump.
Hutcherson dropped byConanlast night withJennifer LawrenceandLiam Hemsworth. WhenConan O’Brienasked whether there could be moreHunger Gamesmovies in the works, Hutcherson quickly blurted out, “there is,” before covering his mouth. “I"m sorry, I can’t say that,” he continued as his co-stars shot him meaningful looks. “I don’t — we’ll see what happens.”
O’Brien wouldn’t let him off the hook, though. “That’s the worst lying I’ve ever seen!” the host exclaimed. O’Brien then asked the stars whether they’d be up for reprising their roles, to which Hutcherson responded, “I would love to.” Lawrence was a bit more measured in her response. “I think we’re already too old, right?” she said, joking about a potential reboot with “younger, hotter people.”

Hutcherson’s comments are not a confirmation of anything, of course. It’s possible that he’s just messing with fans. Even if he isn’t, we don’t know how far along Lionsgate’s plans for more Hunger Games movies actually are.
UPDATE:An official source indicates there are “no plans” for anotherHunger Gamesmovie at this time.
It’s worth noting, though, that this isn’t the first time we’ve heard of Lionsgate’s desire to continue the franchise. In February, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimertold analystshe was “actively looking at some development and thinking about prequel and sequel possibilities” for theHunger Gamesfranchise.
The source material runs out afterMockingjay – Part 2—Suzanne Collinsonly wrote three books — but honestly, it’d be more surprising if Lionsgate weren’t thinking of ways to extend the franchise. The Hunger Games series has been wildly successful for the studio. The first three films have collectively grossed over $2 billion worldwide.
And there is precedent for this kind of thing. Warner Bros. found itself in a similar predicament afterHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, and is now pushing forward with the spinoffFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. They also kept their J.R.R. Tolkien franchise going after the Lord of the Rings trilogy by releasing three Hobbit movies.
