‘Jurassic World 2’ Will Probably Bring Back B.D. Wong

WhenBryce Dallas HowardandChris Prattreturn forJurassic World 2, they may find themselves joined by another familiar face. ProducerFrank Marshallhas hinted thatB.D. Wongwill be back as Dr. Henry Wu in theJ.A. Bayona-directed sequel, which recently added new starsToby JonesandRafe Spall.

CinemaBlendrecently sat down with Marshall and asked whether Wong would resurface in theJurassic Worldsequel. Marshall stopped short of outright confirming anything, but did acknowledge, “When they take off in helicopters, you know they’re probably going to come back.”

As the only major character fromJurassic Parkto return forJurassic World, Wong’s Henry Wu helped serve as connective tissue between the different eras of the franchise. Once a leading scientist behind the Jurassic Park project, Wu stepped up as chief geneticist when the park reopened decades later as Jurassic World. He helped create the Indominus Rex hybrid that terrorized our heroes in the last film, but didn’t seem all that remorseful about all the deaths caused by his monster.

In fact, Wu was last seen leaving Isla Nublar via helicopter at the end ofJurassic World, with a bunch of hybrid dino embryos in tow. It turned out he had been in cahoots with Hoskins (Vincent D’Onofrio’s character) the whole time, with the intention of weaponizing those hybrid dinos. That’s a hell of a plot thread to just leave dangling, so it’s not terribly surprising to learn we haven’t seen the last of Wu.

As for what exactlyJurassic World 2will be, no one involved with the production is saying too much at this point. However, producer and co-writerColin Trevorrow(who helmed the firstJurassic World) has called it a sort ofparable for animal abuse, and suggested the film might deal with “open source” dinosaur DNA as well. He’s also described the sequel as"more suspenseful and scary,“with Bayonamaking the inevitable comparisontoThe Empire Strikes Back.

Intriguingly, Bayona has indicatedJurassic World 2will be more closely tied to the originalJurassic Parkfilms. “What we’re doing is a sequel to Jurassic World, but it’s definitely the fifth chapter of a longer saga,“he said last month. “I think the story is looking for a connection between Jurassic World and Jurassic Park — more than what Jurassic World did.” Bringing back the two eras' only shared character certainly seems like it could be part of that.

Jurassic World 2is gearing up to shoot in March 2017 for release onJune 22, 2018.
