‘Love, Simon’ Trailer: The Charming Coming-Out Movie Now Has A “Romantic AF” Soundtrack
Teen romance movies are a dime a dozen, butLove, Simonhas the benefit of being a major teen romance film revolving around a gay character. Sure, plenty of indie films and prestige flicks have explored the heartache of young gay love or the excruciating fear of coming out, but have any of them done it to an upbeat pop soundtrack? Not many.
Yes, the movie looks cheesy as hell, and yes the stars are as generically attractive as the ones you’ll find in any schlocky teen romance film — starNick Robinsondid first stretch his teen romance acting chops in 2017’s tearjerkerEverything, Everything— but it’s still gives the spotlight to a gay lead in a major motion picture. And that’s huge.
Love Simon Trailer
The newLove, Simontrailer improves remarkably thanks to the Bleacher’sJack Antonoff’s soaring theme song, “Alfie’s Song (Not A Typical Love Song).” Until now, the marketing has veered dangerously close to being cloyingly sweet, but the new trailer is surprisingly wry and funny, contrasting Simon’s (Robinson) internal sexual identity struggle with his sweet relationships with his close-knit group of friends and his family.

Everyone deserves a great love story. But for seventeen-year old Simon Spier it’s a little more complicated: he’s yet to tell his family or friends he’s gay and he doesn’t actually know the identity of the anonymous classmate he’s fallen for online. Resolving both issues proves hilarious, terrifying and life-changing.
