‘The Mummy’ Featurette: Tom Cruise Goes Globetrotting After A Monster

Next weekend, we’ll get a sense of how audiences feel about Universal’sDark Universe.Alex Kurtzman’sThe Mummygets the monster party started, but whether the world wants a world of gods and monsters, we’ll see soon enough. The movie is on track to make $40 million itsopening weekendin the states, but with the power ofTom Cruise, it should perform even better overseas. If one thing seems for sure, it’s that Kurtzman’s film doesn’t lack scope, as a new behind-the-scenes featurette suggests.

Below, check outThe Mummyfeaturette.

Kurtzman has written some huge movies in his career. With theStar Trekfilms,Transformers, andThe Amazing Spider-Man 2, he’s played in some large and expensive sandboxes. Behind the camera, we’ll see how he fares painting on a canvas much, much, muchlarger than his directorial debut,People Like Us, a heartfelt, if a bit shaggy, drama.

With his second feature, he’s going big with a DP who knows to create a tremendous sense of scale. Kurtzman worked with cinematographerBen SeresinonThe Mummy, who shotWorld War Z,Unstoppable,Pain & Gain, andTransformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Some of those movies also have some great daylight action, whichThe Mummylooks have its share of.

Here’sThe Mummyfeaturette, which contains some of the puffiness you expect but also a nice little tease of the film’s scope:

Let’s just hope the action has as much character as the Universal Monster classics do. That’s the spirit of those movies. Nick Morton is still a bit of an enigma from the marketing materials, although it’s clear he isn’t the noblest hero at the start of the movie, butSofia Boutelladoes have the talents to make for an empathetic monster. AfterStar Trek BeyondandKingsman: The Secret Service, it’s obvious she has a huge screen presenceThe Mummymight benefit from.

Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilization: The Mummy. Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.  From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

The Mummyopens in theatersJune 9.
