VOTD: Fanmade Opening Credits For The Black Widow Movie We Deserve

Even though we’ve learned quite a bit aboutScarlett Johansson’s characterBlack Widowin the Marvel cinematic universe, fans of the character still want to see her get her own movie. This seems to be especially true now considering the backlash that’s been going around following the character’s development inThe Avengers: Age of Ultron(there were even rumors that the vitriol being spewed at director Joss Whedon because of itwas the reason he left Twitter recently). Fans just want to see Natasha Romanoff kick some ass on her own.

Sadly, we know Marvel’s slate up through at least 2019 as of now, and there’s no Black Widow on the horizon, despite rumblings ofone being in development last year. But one fan of the idea has decided to put together a slick opening credits sequence for the Black Widow movie we deserve. Watch the video after the jump!

Here’s the fanmade opening credits for aBlack Widowmovie (viaThe Mary Sue):

Christopher Haleyput this video together as the final project for his class in Adobe After Effects, and the influence of James Bond credits sequences is very deliberate, as he envisions this as a straight-up spy film. The use of the trackSour Timesby Portishead is a very nice touch.

And for those who are interested, Haley even came up with a plot synopsis for this hypothetical Black Widow movie:

Cut off one head, two more shall take its place… For this speculative title sequence of a Black Widow film I decided Black Widow’s villain would be… Black Widow. Yelena Belova, to be specific. Belova believes herself to be the superior Black Widow, and in some ways she is right. Swift and ruthless, Belova is the most talented assassin to graduate from the Red Room– and now she is Hydra’s most deadly weapon. At Belova’s side is a super-soldier of her own, Alexi Shostakov– the Red Guardian, who also happens to be Natasha’s former lover. When the new heads of Hydra make a play for the power of the infinity stones it is up to S.H.I.E.L.D.’s top agent to stop them.

In this pipedream of a movie,Rosamund Pikewould play Yelena Belova, the other Black Widow, whileSamuli Edelmann(Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol) would have the role of the Red Guardian. The plot would also bring Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) and Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. into the mix, though Haley says in retrospect he wishes that he included The Winter Soldier in this sequence as well.

While this may not be the best plot for a Black Widow movie, it seems Haley has done more to make this movie happen than Marvel has. In fact, it seems Marvel is having some trouble pleasing Black Widow fans lately. Marvel starMark Ruffalorecentlycalled for more Black Widow merchandiseas it seems to be non-existent on many shelves. You may have even noticed that Black Widow wastaken out of a toy setthat depicted a scene in which she is one of the central pieces of badassery.

So we know there’s demand for a Black Widow movie, andGame of ThronesdirectorNeil Marshall has even expressed interestin directing it. At this point, the ball is in Marvel’s court to make something happen with Natasha Romanoff going on a solo adventure. But for now, it seems like they’re fine with having her as a pivotal supporting character (she’ll be inCaptain America: Civil War) and developing her that way. In the meantime, we’ll just have towatch theSaturday Night Liveparodythat puts Black Widow in a romantic comedy with Ultron. But hopefully at some point we get the Black Widow movie we deserve.

Do you still want a solo Black Widow movie? What do you think of this credits sequence?
